The UWI Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) is a non-profit organization incorporated in 1990 and has over the years been the main fund-raising arm for projects that support the development of the UWI Mona Campus.

It all began when the Mona campus of the University of the West Indies was devastated by hurricane Gilbert in 1988 and a small dedicated team of Jamaican businessmen formed the Jamaican Appeal Committee. In one year, they raised enough funds to contribute significantly towards the repairs of the buildings so as to keep classes going and the University’s teaching hospital functioning. This success was continued through the formation of the University of the West Indies Development and Endowment Fund (UWIDEF) on August 20th 1990.

The Board of Directors and staff members have a wide range of experience in areas such as finance and investment, academia, manufacturing, construction and project management. These members have the wealth of knowledge to ensure proper stewardship, accountability and management that facilitates a strong endowment fund.

UWIDEF is a recognised charitable organization in Jamaica and the United States. As such, all donations to the Fund are tax exempt in these countries. The mission of UWIDEF is to promote the development of the Mona Campus of the University of the West Indies, and advance the economic and social development of Jamaica through the cultivation and generation of new resources to support research, quality tertiary education as well as greater access to higher education.

The fund is dedicated to the cultivation and generation of new resources to advance the University of the West Indies. Our Fund Raising campaign ranges from major capital campaigns and projects to a general endowment and planned giving. The fund in its 25th year of existence has funded several projects and research grants at the UWI Mona campus. In addition to projects and research, UWIDEF awards over 50 scholarships annually. These awards are administered through the Office of Student Financing for transparency.

UWIDEF-Mona continues to seek partnerships with graduates of Mona, corporate entities and other stakeholders. The call to action is simple –help us build the Mona campus. It is an investment in the social and economic development of Jamaica and the region. Whether it is investing in scholarships to help deserving students meet their financial needs, supporting innovation and research, or improving facilities to enhance the student experience – opportunities abound to make a difference and leave your indelible mark – a legacy for Jamaica’s future.
